Instead of putting your full address, as some other sources might advise, its now becoming common only to include your city and region since most people are no longer sending out snail mail. Many people, including high schoolers, have websites, blogs, and social media accounts. If you have a link to something that youre very proud of and want to show to potential employers, you should include it. It might not relate directly to the job youre looking for, but it can provide proof of other traits you write on your resume. Just make sure it is completely clean of anything you wouldnt want a potential employer to see.

How to Find an Anchor Client and Why You Need One

How to Find an Anchor Client and Why You Need OneHow to Find an Anchor Client and Why You Need OneYoull probably begin having doubts at some point during your first year of freelancing, no matter how well-organized you are. You might have too many clients, not enough money, and not nearly enough free time. How is it possible to work 70 hours a week and barely break even? Its important to maintain multiple clients so youre not left scrambling when one disappears, but having too many small clients can leave you cash-poor and exhausted. You need an anchor client to make it as a freelancer in the long-term. How to Get an Anchor Client? An anchor client is the cornerstone of your freelance business portfolio. Its an ongoing gig or a long-term contract that more or less promises a certain amount of money each month and a relatively consistent time commitment. Ideally, your anchor client will pay you enough that you can pay alfruchtwein all your bills with just this one gig- and it alwa ys pays you on time. An anchor client basically provides you with most of the benefits of a real job, like semi-regular infusions of cash and some structure. But it doesnt require that you show up every day and sit through interminable meetings. Develop One of Your Smaller Clients Reliability is the single best quality you can cultivate as a freelancer. Youll get more work when your clients have it to offer if you always do what you say youre going to do it when you say youre going to do it. Provide a Cheaper Alternative You might hear about job openings at companies as you develop relationships with your smaller clients. Keep an eye out and an ear open for gigs that sound like something you could do on a contract basis...then throw your hat into the ring. Most employers are delighted to hire a contractor instead of a full-time employee. Its cheaper because they dont have to pay benefits or payroll taxes. They wont have to deal with a layoff or termination should they no lon ger require your services. Go Back to Your Network You most likely have a built-in network for contract work if you transitioned to freelancing after spending several years as an employee. Keep your old bosses and colleagues in the loop and make sure they know youre always looking for work. Connect with them on LinkedIn and other social networks. Carry business cards in case you run into folks in real life who might need your services. It takes some practice to do this without feeling like youre asking for a handout, but you might be the solution to their problems if these people have more work than they can handle. Theres nothing wrong with being prepared to make a case for yourself should the opportunity arise. Get a Part-Time Job Sometimes the best way to make a go of it as a freelancer is not to freelance, at least not full time. Finding a part-time job that offers a regular paycheck might give you the security you need to take bigger risks with your business. Employers are often delighted to consider hiring on a part-time basis even if they didnt originally intend it because its cheaper. Apply Blind Even if 60% of jobs- full time or otherwise- come through networking, that still leaves 40% so it can be worth it to apply blindly to erreichbar listings. Youre looking for a few keywords in particular, such as X hours per week or X-month contract when youre hunting for that anchor gig. The Bottom Line Make sure your clients know youre available. Be on the lookout for opportunities to expand your workload with your favorite companies. This is an ongoing process- dont rest on your laurels when you have a to-die-for anchor client nailed down. The company could go out of business or otherwise change course so it no longer needs your services. You dont want to have to scramble to replace it, so try to keep a few potentials waiting in the wings.

8 lessons youll learn if you quit your job to travel

8 lessons youll learn if you quit your job to travel8 lessons youll learn if you quit your job to travelRoughly half a year ago, I packed a single checked bag, a carry-on, and a backpack, loaded everything else I owned into a storage unit, and happily boarded a one-way flight from New Yorks JFK to Split, Croatia. A month before, I quit my full-time job as an editorial and content director at a flourishing start-up to take what felt (and proved to be) the trip of a lifetime.Deciding to e-sign on the dotted line to join Remote Year, a program that gives digital nomads the opportunity to work in 12 different international cities over the course of a year, welchesnt a tough call to make. Though I - admittedly - exercised my type-A mentality and made a pro/con list, when it came time to opt in or out, I cant describe the sense of relief or excitement when I decided to join the Yugen community. Along with 56 otherbeibeibei talented folks, I wake up each day fueled by coffee and wonder, f eeling like Ive been given the undefinable gift of redefining what it means to be a professional.Im not the only one either. Many 20 and 30 (and 40 and 50)-somethings are putting a thick question mark over the voreingestellt (and tired) rules of making their way up those pillars of success. Remote Year isnt the only program that challenges workers to redesign the traditional approach to working, and many nomadic workers are choosing to take the leap all on their own, too. After filing mora than 200 articles from Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Japan, I can confidently say that while there are difficulties keeping hours abroad and navigating the freelance lifestyle, Ive mostly been amazed and surprised at how seamless the transition has been. And - sorry mom and dad - but Im not sure how anyone returns to the standard 9-to-5 gig after experiencing the inspiration, the freedom, and the community thats found between the pages of your pa ssport.Want to take the plunge? Here, eight digital nomads share what they learned from quitting their jobs to travel the globe - and how it might be a possibility for you, too.You have to always be growing and learningFellow freelance writer Brittany Hughes grew tired of writing for others instead of for herself. After gaining experience building brands and giving them a voice, she decided to quit her corporate role as an advertising copywriter in the hopes of doing something that had more of an impact by building her blog.As she makes her way through Prague, Africa and beyond, shes picking up writing projects but mostly, shes learning all that she can - a skill she says is vital to success as a nomad. You have to treat building your own brand like building your own business. You always have to look for ways to improve and learn more. From taking e-courses on photography to reading books about travel writing, Im always looking for ways to grow and get better, she says. You get the m ost out of the nomadic life when you build your communityIt welches freelance videographer Jason Rosts wife who suggested completely changing his life, even though she wouldnt be joining him for the ride. After working as an environment artist and game designer in the video game industry for Sony, Warner Brothers, and Valkyrie Entertainment, he felt stagnant and needed something that would break him out of his rut and fuel his inspiration.I quit my job because I didnt want to be traveling and keep a regular work schedule, and working for myself allows me to set my own hours and not have to keep a strict schedule, he says. I also wanted to be able to take my job outdoors. Filming allows me to visit unique locations that Im interested in, film them, and combine sightseeing with work. What has he learned on-the-go? The vast importance of developing and finding a community while youre traveling really makes the nomadic lifestyle worth it.Our group is so diverse, theres always something n ew to learn or someone that challenges your assumptions. Being around so many driven, unique personalities has really pushed me to be my best at times, he says.Happiness isnt tied to your job, but to your lifeFor the first year she traveled abroad, Sarah Rabideau kept her job working in advertising technology in digital strategy, but recently, she decided to put in her notice and invest her time and energy into the travel start-up, Pana. Her decision to pack it up and head out was prompted by 50+ hour weeks in New York City, and overall, feeling burnt out professionally, emotionally, and physically. The experience of setting foot in continents all over the world helped her realize that her career doesnt define her.Asking what do you do? is a very American question and even more so a New York City question. Ive learned that my happiness doesnt come from a high salary and a title in an industry that doesnt fulfill me, she says. Traveling has inspired me to keep an open mind, try new th ings, meet more people and to get out of my comfort zone.Dont forget to call your momArt director and designer Sally Fung was trigger shy the first time she was offered the chance to travel for a year. Fast-forward a few months later when a second opportunity arrived, and she finally got up the courage to let go of her full-time job - where she worked overtime nights and weekends at an agency - to see the planet. While contracting, she will visit Europe, Asia, South America, and beyond, expanding her creativity and her skillset on the road. For Fung, being left to her own devices has taught her how much she truly enjoys design, and how now, it feels a lot less like work and more like a passion and a hobby. But as wonderful as travel is, shes also realized that its not quite as glamorous as it sounds being a digital nomad, and sometimes, its okay to miss home.Theres a lot of hype about it and you get showered with compliments of bravery and courage or something like youve made the b est decision of your life. Its easy to lose sight that life is still happening, she says. You dont put life on pause to travel. Therell be lots of emotions and internal struggles, there may be heart breaks and emergencies back home. Its learning to be selfish and responsible at the same time. Just remember to always call your mom.You reap the most reward from being flexibleWhen Lisa Niver was working as a teacher and part-time at Club Med, she couldnt shake the desire to have more adventures. She wanted to scuba dive. She wanted to move. She wanted to see the world. Energized with hope and hunger, she moved to Copper Mountain, Colorado to work and ski. Then to the Bahamas to snorkel. Then on a cruise line for seven years, sailing all over the world - and getting paid for it. Then it was Asia, and the list continues. These days, she films travel segments and has an active YouTube channel about wanderlust, and has grown as a professional and as a person in more ways than she can count . But the greatest lesson being nomadic has taught her? The F word - and no, not that one flexibility. Both with travel plans and with her worldview. When I went back to teaching after spending three months in India and three months in Nepal, one day the lights went out. My students were freaking out. We had a long discussion about how in Nepal they only have power for 13 hours a day and that some people do not have hot water or any water in their homes. My students were interested in why there was not 24 hours of power a day, she says. It was a great life lesson and we decided we liked the classroom with the lights off and the blinds open. You quickly learn your value - and how to market itJeanna Manifold felt lucky to work in an industry that challenged her and, well, was fun. Though she managed the media account for Australias largest travel retailer, she found herself growing more and more restless. Instead of feeling inspired by the client, she really just wanted to visit the d estinations she was writing briefs about. One day I finally realized as a single, child-free woman, the only thing stopping me was that I voluntarily chained myself to a desk for too many hours a week, she says. So what did she do? Break free These days, she finagles her work to match her travel goals, country hopping along the way.Though shes new to the nomadic way of earning money, shes quickly discovered her value - and more importantly, how to profit off of it.My skills are much more transferable than I give myself credit, particularly within the marketing and advertising space. Within the first few weeks of my nomadic life Ive dabbled in digital content writing, developed some sales collateral, and tried my hand at SEO, she says. Im not earning anywhere near as much as I did in a high-powered role - yet - but Im teaching myself new skills every day and accidentally learning others along the way.Networking comes easier - and differently - remotelyScott Dukette retired from a civil engineering firm and signed a one year non-compete, preventing him from snagging a job at another company in his field. Though he didnt have a defined pension income and wasnt old enough for social security, he had the means to bridge a career transition that took him exploring countries worldwide. Along with his wife, he decided to travel for a year, hoping to connect with various communities and organizations globally. Hes used the so-called break between his first career and whatever his second will be to consult and cultivating fiction-writing skills. But mostly, hes savoring the peace that comes with remote work.Im writing this from the pool deck on the roof of our apartment building at 9 a.m.. The sun is shining, it s 77 F, birds are chirping and I can hear the distant sounds of the fitness boot camp that meets nearby, he writes. But his greatest takeaway from this dramatic shift is how easy it is to network as a nomad, especially when youre open to it.Ive added several great contacts in each city weve visited, some personal and some potentially professional. Ive also discovered that an American with an engineering degree - even a monolingual one outside of computer tech - is taken seriously in most countries, more so than in the U.S., he says. One common theme Ive found is that having to communicate every day in another language that you dont speak well, or at all, exercises my left brain. Every day is amazing. Sometimes I still feel surprised and even overwhelmed that were actually doing it.Being your own boss means you must be disciplinedFor those who have never lived in the Big Apple, it might sound insane that author Ellen Goodlett reached a point where the city felt small. After working in the same industry for seven years, she wanted something that would stir up her life and invigorate her. Challenged with the opportunity to travel, she quit her full-time gig to ghostwrite cheesy romantic novels and debuted her first book, while touring th e big ole world. The experience of working for herself has taught her the vast importance of sticking to deadlines - something you might take for granted when someone else is dictating them.It takes a lot more active energy and work than my previous position, and while the schedule is more flexible, there are times when I have deadlines I simply need to hit, no matter what other life situations get in the way. But the freedom its bought me simply cant be beat, especially while traveling, she says. You have to be so flexible and open to trying new things/adapting to situations youve never encountered before, all the time. But I love it like crazy and wouldnt trade it for anything. Even when Im feeling overwhelmed and I have a lot of work piling up, I feel excited to wake up and tackle it every morning - which is all I can ask for A job and a life that I truly love.

5 Best Companies List Their Most-Wanted Skills

5 'Best Companies' List Their Most-Wanted Skills 5 'Best Companies' List Their Most-Wanted Skills 5 'Best Companies' List Their Most-Wanted Skills When someone decides that it's time to change careers, their first step is usually to figure out which skills they have already developed that they can transfer to the new field. That can be easy if you're, say, a computer-savvy restaurant server who wants to work in an online call center (transferable skills: customer service, computer knowledge, communication, conflict resolution); or if you're a teacher who would prefer to work as a focus group facilitator for a market research firm (transferable skills: public speaking, maintaining audience interest, developing tests or questionnaires). But what if you know what you want to do, but don't know what transferable skills you have to offer? Start with a core of common skills that most if not all employers want. For instance, look at what five of Fortune magazine's Best Companies to Work For seek when they need to hire someone (emphasis mine): Edward Jones (financial services) We want people who can work independently, because each of our advisors works in his or her own branch office. SRA International (software) We want people who share our values of integrity and exceptional customer service, people who want to do something meaningful. CH2M Hill (engineering) We look for flexibility the willingness to move from one business to another and to pick up new skills as you go. Also, this is a highly collaborative environment, so it's especially important to be willing to listen to other people. People who can't work well with a diverse team haven't lasted here. Booz Allen Hamilton (strategy and technology consulting) We want brains (and) a heart. We want people who care about each other and will dig in and make their client's mission their own mission. We also do a lot of community outreach, so we look for a volunteer and community service background. NetApp (software) It's important for people who come to NetApp to leave their ego at the door. If someone doesn't possess the communication and collaboration skills necessary to succeed, they probably won't be selected for the job. See all those boldfaced words? You'll find similar basic requirements in most jobs if you read the job postings carefully. But keep in mind that many of those highlighted terms are soft skills. These companies give a lot of weight to a candidate's personal qualities, not just direct experience or hard skills (which can be acquired on the job). The secret to marketing a soft skill is to not just state that you have it, but to give proof of it by listing related accomplishments in your resume and stories in your interviews. Figure out how you used these skills to make a difference for your current and previous employers, and how you can make the most of them when you market yourself in a new industry. What skills do you believe nearly every employer looks for today? Share your opinion with us.

7 Tips for Acing the Initial Screening Interview

7 Tips for Acing the Initial Screening Interview 7 Tips for Acing the Initial Screening Interview Sometimes, getting a foot in the door is actually the hard part. For many candidates, it's easier to demonstrate their worth through rounds of interviews than to break the initial barrier to land that coveted first conversation. As soon as you submit your  résumé  online, it officially enters the applicant tracking system â€" and poof! You  may feel like you’ll never be heard from again. Actually, recruiters actively search the ATS for candidates who meet their job requirements, so why not prepare yourself for a call you may very well get? This first call may be a make-it-or-break-it situation for candidates who don’t take it seriously. Sure, it’s a friendly introductory conversation about the company, but the goal is for the recruiter to sort through countless candidates on paper to make compelling cases for you to interview. Competition is fierce, so getting past this gatekeeper round is critical to interviewing success. 1. Don’t be so available. That’s right â€" don’t answer your phone. The purpose of the screening call is to ensure you meet the job requirements, but it’s also to ensure you’re coherent, enthusiastic and still looking for a new role. The recruiter may also want to find out your employment authorization status and if you require a visa. If you answer a call from an unrecognized number, it could be game over before it began. Maybe you’re at your desk in a cubicle environment only to find yourself whispering  inconspicuously. Or maybe you’re at  the pharmacy or local coffee shop during your lunch break. Reduce your chances of being frazzled and unprepared. Simply let the message go to voicemail and return the call within 24 hours. If the recruiter reaches out to you via email â€" even better! Respond with your availability to schedule a call. 2. Review the job description. Prior to calling back, thoroughly review the job description. If it’s no longer posted online, kindly ask the recruiter to email it to you so you may prepare for the call.  If you’re actively interviewing and applying for countless jobs, it’s easy to forget exact details of each one. Peruse details of the job so you can speak articulately about why you’re a fit. In doing so, review your résumé as well to talk specifically about your experiences and how they match the company’s employment needs. 3. Call from a quiet location. Do it on your terms. Instead of getting so excited that you return the call from the local drugstore, call from a conference room, your car or after hours at home. Once the call has been scheduled on the calendar, set aside at least 30 minutes to speak without any interruptions. 4. Learn about the company. Yes, looking for a job may feel tedious, but job searching 101 entails knowing what business the employer is in. Check out the media page on the company’s website to eyeball why it may have recently been in the news.Chances are, you won’t be grilled on the phone during a screener, but you should definitely know what they do. If anything, at least know how to properly pronounce the company name. If you’re not sure, call the main number and ask a receptionist for the pronunciation.5. Be timely with tests. Some positions require a test as part of the screening process. If a test is involved, set aside quiet time to focus and complete it as soon as possible. For example, administrative assistants may have an online test that takes an hour or two to complete. When a passing grade is mandatory to proceed to the next round, delaying the test just postpones the inevitable: proceeding to an office interview. 6. Be transparent. Make it easy for the recruiter to say yes to your candidacy. Be both flexible and transparent with your availability. If you’re going away on vacation the following week, mention it. This way, when the recruiters reach out to you and don’t get an immediate response, they’ll know why.  If you’re not available to interview until busy season is over, mention that as well. Be tactful about what you include as long as it’s relevant to the job and your availability. If you’re asked about a specific computer program that you don't know, do not lie. Never lie, but you can say you’re a quick learner and reference other programs you are proficient in. 7. Be enthusiastic. Let your enthusiasm shine! Try to build rapport on the phone without coming across as needy or desperate. Express interest in the company, and ask about the next steps and a potential timeframe. Also, if you don’t already have it from scheduling the interview, ask for the recruiter’s email address so you can follow up.

8 Strategies to Get to Know Your Cool Boss Better - The Muse

8 Strategies to Get to Know Your Cool Boss Better - The Muse 8 Strategies to Get to Know Your Cool Boss Better Bosses can always be a mixed bag. When you’re starting out at a new role, your supervisor could be anywhere from the perfect mentor to a total nightmare. But (hopefully) more often than not, you do get to work a person you both like and admire. And when that happens, you’re suddenly much more invested in strengthening the relationship. But I get it: That tight line between employee and friend can be hard to walk. To help you avoid crossing that line, I rounded up eight realistic strategies for getting to know your manager a little bit better. First things first, establish your work relationship. If you’re not doing well as an employee, then unrelated conversations might make you seem like you don’t care about your responsibilities. Not sure how to make an impression on a big team? Self-advocate so your supervisor knows just how awesome you actually are at your job. You should also be sure to get on your boss’ good side if you’re not already on it. Otherwise, you could make a bad situation worse. Serious about developing a better relationship? Take initiative- sometimes you can only have the kinds of conversations you want to have by starting them yourself. Cheesy, but true: All good partnerships are built off of trust. Your professional ones aren’t any different. You can also take office milestones, such as performance reviews, as opportunities to be honest and transparent about your interests and goals. Even better, ask questions on the job. Not only will you learn more about your work, but you’ll also get unique insights. And finally, keep in mind that it’s not all about small talk. Having a stronger relationship with your boss means it’s that much more important to have the hard conversations.

Being a superstar at work may be hurting your peers (and how to fix it)

Being a superstar at work may be hurting your peers (and how to fix it) Being a superstar at work may be hurting your peers (and how to fix it) Almost every office has a star employee who carries the weight for their colleagues. And if that star is you, chances are there are never enough minutes in the day to fulfill everyone’s demands of your time.Still, it may seem like the best choice just to keep on keeping on. But the truth is your ambition and capacity may be holding back some of your colleagues while leading to undue frustration on your part.According to Sue  Shellenbarger, the work and family columnist for the Wall Street Journal, star employees “risk burning out, becoming a bottleneck on their teams or overshadowing co-workers who stop learning and growing.” This means that all your good intentions may actually have unwanted consequences for your peers and your company. It’s true that high achievers have merit.  Shellenbarger cites Michael Mankins, co-author of “Time, Talent and Energy” and a partner with Bain Co., who says “star performers are 51% more productive than others in their field.”That mea ns that a really great employee can make the whole operation more efficient, just with their presence. But in more creative fields, these high-achievers actually tend to hold back their less brilliant co-workers, according to a new study that has yet to be published.  â€œYou somehow create a dependency, so that others rely on you,”  Ning Li, who conducted the study, told the Journal.Always being the achiever also puts a lot of pressure on workers, which can create tensions that cause employees to leave their jobs.“Executives are left scratching their heads, wondering how they lost their superstar,” said  Dana Brownlee, founder of corporate-training firm Professionalism Matters. There are plenty of things bosses can do to make sure their top performers don’t burn out. But if you’re the star on your team, what can you do to take care of yourself?Shellenbarger’s made a list of dos and don’ts for the high achievers out there … and they’re rules to live by if you’re one of them. Here are her suggestions, in her own words:What not to do: Take over important projects. Agree to every demand on your time. Extend your work hours so you can do it all. Allow work to back up because you’re too rushed to help. Deprive colleagues of learning opportunities. Allow your ideas to eclipse everyone else’s. What to do: Prioritize demands on your time. Delegate unmanageable work to others. Invite coworkers’ ideas and suggestions. Guard against overload and burnout. Notice teammates’ problems and offer help. Help coworkers grow their careers.

Ready to Promote an Employee Read This First

Ready to Promote an Employee Read This First Ready to Promote an Employee Read This First Of course, I understand that training programs are hard to get off the ground for many startups and small businesses. Thats why Id like to offer the following tips on helping employees move on up â€" not out â€" at your company: 1. Formalize Your Management Training The promoted employee was hired for a specific position â€" in other words, they probably werent hired to be a manager. Still, the employee probably took on more responsibilities over time at your company before becoming a full-fledged manager. In many cases, this type of gradual transition leaves no room for formal management training.  Seventy percent employee learning happens on the job, which isnt necessarily a good thing: The promoted employee may pick up management practices that dont align with your expectations. Fix This: Dont wait for management mistakes to happen before you address them. Instead, be proactive. Write up a quick outline of your goals and expectations for the promoted employee. Be sure to include information like the scope of their authority, how they fit into the company structure now, and what you expect them to do when major challenges arise. All organizations are different, and regardless of how yours is structured, your new managers will appreciate clear guidance as they acclimate to their  new roles. 2. Encourage Delegation, Not Dumping When promoted employees transition  into leadership roles, that means a lot of the work they used to do will have to be delegated to others. Make sure new managers understand that delegating doesnt mean they can just dump their responsibilities onto someone elses shoulders. Rather, your new managers need to approach delegation in the same way that you approaching their promotion: You are helping them adjust to their new roles, and they should be helping employees adjust to their newly assigned tasks as well. Continuous, social, peer-to-peer learning is  incredibly important if you want your organization to run smoothly. Fix This: Let newly promoted employees know that their previous roles are  still their responsibility until the ship is manned. This may seem like common sense, but promoted employees may forget it in the rush of excitement that comes with climbing the ranks. Make sure new managers are regularly checking in with  and assisting the employees who have taken on their former duties. 3. Assess the Promoted Employees Progress Pay attention to  how the employee is handling their new role. Have they taken the initiative to send you goals for their departments? Have they sought out management resources or tips? The latter may be hard to assess if its not coming up in conversation, but, eventually, youll be able to tell whether or not your new manager is  taking steps to develop their skills. If departments arent improving, productivity isnt increasing, and employee morale isnt getting better by the day, then youll want to scrutinize the situation more deeply  to see if any real changes are being made. Fix This: While its best not to come off as overbearing, you want to make sure the right person has been promoted. Youll be able to tell if your decision was a good one within the first few months. Be sure to watch out for the extremely excited employee who kicks it into high gear right at the start, only to burn out later on down the line. Remind your employees to maintain a steady pace, and keep your door open for any conversations your new managers may want to have. Have more tips for training new managers? Engineers Cook Up New Robots for Hungry Food Industry

Engineers Cook Up New Robots for Hungry Food Industry Engineers Cook Up New Robots for Hungry Food Industry Engineers Cook Up New Robots for Hungry Food Industry Engineers using sensors, vision technology, and artificial intelligence have made great strides in developing autonomous vehicles and devices for the health care field have laid the groundwork for greater use of industrial robots in other industries. The food industry, generally thought of as an early adopter of new technologies, is no exception. Renowned at excelling at automatic and repetitive tasks, robots have the potential for cutting production costs, improving product quality and reliability, and increasing speed of operations and workplace safety. However, challenges using robots still remain in certain tasks and activities, such as in processing raw food, checking for quality control, and interacting with their human colleagues. Primary processing of raw food like poultry, which includes sorting, butchering, and cutting, has turned out to be much more complicated than expected. Its been a more challenging problem than people thought initially, said Wayne Daley, associate division chief and principal research engineer in Georgia Techs Agricultural Technology Research Program [ATRP]. If you go into most poultry plants today, you still dont see many robots on the processing line there. For You: The Moral Beauty of a Disobedient Robot With funding from the state, Daleys group is specifically focused on developing robotic systems with advanced sensors, robotics, computer simulation, and control technologies to improve productivity in the poultry industry, which accounts for more than half of the Georgias agribusiness in Georgia. I expect within another year or so we are going to see machines out there doing some of these operations we couldnt do before, he said. Quality control and safety when robots interact with humans require lots of data, training and time, said Karen Panetta, dean of graduate education for the School of Engineering at Tufts University. The big challenge is how do you get [the robot] to learn reliably, she said. Wayne Daley (left) is developing robotic systems to improve production in poultry industry. Image: Georgia Tech She leads a team developing algorithms for robot vision and imaging applications. Her focus stems from her interest in detecting tumors and threat objects in the body by getting computers to see and evaluate images as a human does. This is the type of capability that robots in the food industry will need for tasks such as quality control, scanning food for something like harmful bacteria, or preventing itself from hurting a human. For simple tasks, like searching a batch of potato chips for a burnt one, the robot is usually trainable, but looking look for bacteria in a head of lettuce gets more complicated because vision sensors alone arent sufficient, Panetta says. Her work involves using a combination of sensors, imaging, and artificial intelligence. When you have outliers [such as undesirable cells in the body or unwanted microorganisms in food] and are doing a classification, you need to be able to say with absolute certainty yes, this is or no, it isnt. Her team has also been working in the area of industrial safety, where she says there are very few guidelines about human interaction with robots. When you expect robots to be dynamic and to adjust to their surroundings or their environment, you exponentially complicate the problem, she said. The robot has to be smart enough to say, Oh there is a human nearby, let me get out of the way or let me stop. Industrial accidents typically happen when a worker tries to clear a jammed operating line, gets into the robots space, and the robot just keeps going. Thats a hard problem to solve, she said. You can put in a boundary and say never go this far, never within X inches of a [human]. Thats not enough. The robot has to be reactive and smart. On the poultry processing line, Daley explains that the difficulty with some primary tasks, such as sorting and cutting chickens, in contrast to the follow-up secondary processing when ingredients are more standardized, stems from the fact that birds are varying shapes, sizes, and weight. While the poultry industry has become better at minimizing the differences through breeding, the variability is still a big challenge when it comes to automating processing, Daley said. As an example of just one task, he explained that in de-boning a breast, the industry is not happy with the yield of any automated devices because the angle that the meat needs to be cut to achieve the greatest yield can vary greatly from bird to bird. One project his team is developing is a robotic cutting and deboning system that uses 3D imaging and artificial intelligence to sever tendons and joints on bird front-halves in preparation for the removal of the wings and breast meat. The system can think and react to its environment as a human does but works faster and better, he said. Daley said the team first tackled what it considered significant stumbling blocks using a slower, older robot to demonstrate proof of concept. These included whether the robotic cutting arm could do the sensing and process algorithms necessary to generate ideal cutting trajectories and then to implement the trajectory properly. With that step completed, the team now is looking at implementation using the current generation of robots for a commercially viable solution in terms of operational speeds and cost. He is optimistic that it will be one of those solutions available soon for trial. Another ATRP robotic project progressing along the same timeline is expected to improve production even before broilers get to the processing plant. A team is working on a mobile autonomous robot that will continuously monitor the birds and conditions in commercial chicken houses such as temperature, humidity, food delivery, water delivery, and lighting, and perhaps even locate and pick up eggs. These tasks typically require several visits a day by a human. The team is now licensing screening and imaging technologies from other companies. We can leverage a lot of the work in other fields to tackle this problem so that it will be more affordable, Daley said. These are things we couldnt do years ago. How to Conduct a Long-Distance Job Search

How to Conduct a Long-Distance Job Search How to Conduct a Long-Distance Job Search Conducting a long-distance job search and attracting the attention of employers outside your home area can be a challenging task. Many employers view local candidates as safer prospects than those who would need to relocate. In addition, working with long distance candidates involves more scheduling and can complicate the hiring process for the company. Employers also save on relocation costs and interview travel costs by hiring from their local area. Tips for Conducting a Long-Distance Job Search That Works What can you do to improve your chances when competing for out of town jobs? The key is to indicate that you are planning to relocate to that area and that youre flexible - both for interviewing and for starting work if you are hired.   Focus Your Job Search Finding jobs to apply for in the new location is the easiest part of long-distance job searching. You can specify a location in the advanced search options of all the leading job boards and job search engines. You can also utilize local resources like the Chamber of Commerce, and the help wanted ads in the local newspaper. Both typically have online job postings for available local positions. If you need more help, heres  how to find local job listings, and  how to find a job in a new city. If there are employers in the new location you’d love to work for, check job listings and apply for open positions directly on the company’s website. Explain in Your Cover Letters You can make it clear in your cover letters that you’re planning to relocate to the city where the job is located. Mentioning a reason for moving to the area, such as wanting to be nearer to elderly parents or to join a partner, can be an effective strategy. In order to alleviate employer concerns about travel costs, you can state in your cover letters that you’ll be visiting the area to investigate housing options, and you’d be interested in meeting at that time, or during another such trip in the near future. Heres more information on  how to mention relocation in your cover letter. Designate a Specific Location in Your Resume Your resume is another vehicle for conveying your plans to live in the area where a job is being offered. Some job databases allow registrants to designate a desired location. A more powerful strategy is to list the desired location adjacent to your current address on your resume. For example, you might state Moving to Tampa, Florida in June or Desired work location â€" Portland, Oregon. In some cases, you may be able to use a local address, such as a family member or friends house. Keep in mind that the employer may expect you to be available on short notice for an interview. Be Prepared to Interview You’ll need to have a plan in place when youre contacted to interview. Figure out how youre going to be able to get to the interview location in a timely manner. That might mean an expensive plane ticket unless you can find a last-minute bargain. In addition, you’ll need to figure out how to take time off from your current job. Depending on the level of the job, the company may or may not offer to  pay some or all of your travel expenses. Use Your Personal Network If you’re networking your way into an organization, you might enlist the support of your internal contacts to convey to decision makers the message that you’re relocating to the area. In addition, your personal network is also a good source of advice on making the move when it actually happens. Youll be able to find out about housing, schools, and other factors involved in relocating. Consider Making the Move in Advance Another option is to move to the area where you’d like to work before you have an actual job lined up. That may seem a little scary, but it’s possible with some forethought. For exampling, finding temporary work or taking on some gigs to pay the bills while youre seeking a permanent position is a way to generate income. But, you need to keep in mind all the various expenses involved with a big move before you pack your bags. Be Sure to Consider All Your Expenses Its a good idea to calculate your expenses prior to making your move. In addition to travel expenses for interviews, you’ll also have all the expenses involved with relocating, and there’s the possibility of some down time if you’re not moving from one job immediately into the next. Use these free calculators to check out salaries and the cost-of-living in the location where you are interested in relocating.
